Tips for Landscaping a Small Yard in Boise, ID

As the Boise and Meridian, Idaho areas continue to grow, we continue to see construction on single family homes, which are sometimes purchased before landscaping is performed. At Bella Vista Landscape, our landscape design service have been in high demand, and we have loved serving new homeowners or friends and neighbors new to the Treasure Valley by helping them create a space on their properties that fit their vision and are perfect for their unique lifestyles. We have seen an increase in homes with a smaller yard as demand calls for larger homes or homes built on smaller properties; today, we will be discussing tips to create a beautiful landscape even with a limited or smaller yard.

Tip #1: Create a focal point

Much like photography or drawing or painting, a focal point is a point of visual interest in your yard, and intentionality can make even a small yard stand out. Being mindful of different elements you want to include in your yard can create a beautiful space that feels thoughtful and well-planned out, which can add to the beauty and peace of your space. Focal points for smaller yards tend to be smaller. A few examples include:

  • A water feature: A water feature can be as elaborate as a multi-tiered waterfall, or as simple as a birdbath. If you choose a fountain or pond, the sound of running water may add to the sense of peace on your property.

  • A tree or shrub: Selecting a unique plant can also add visual interest. For the element you use as a focal point, consider using a plant with something that stands out, such as interesting bark, unusual foliage, or beautiful flowers that will draw in the eye.

  • A seating area: Perhaps you want a small patio or overhead structure to add to your yard. A cozy seating area is a great functional element to draw interest. We recommend choosing comfortable seating that can accommodate the number of people who will regularly use your yard, and accent pillows or other decorative elements can create an inviting and aesthetically appealing space.

  • Garden art: A unique piece of artwork can also be an eye-catching addition! Consider placing a sculpture or decorative object that reflects the style you are trying to cultivate in your yard to draw interest.

  • A vertical garden: Vertical gardens are becoming increasingly popular, and are a wonderful option for plant lovers who don’t have a large property. Use a trellis or living wall to add greenery and create a focal point using a variety of plants that can be showcased in a compact space.

Tip #2: Keep it simple

It can be really easy to create an overwhelming or overly complex space when landscaping a small yard. Sometimes, simplicity has the greatest charm of all, and especially if you’re trying to create a relaxing space for you and your loved ones, we recommend trying to embrace clean lines and simplicity. Stick to a few key design elements, and make sure each element serves a purpose and contributes to the overall aesthetic you are trying to build.

Tip #3: Choose appropriately sized plants

As you can imagine, planting an evergreen that will grow to be forty feet tall--and wide to match!--may not be in your best interest as a homeowner with a small yard. Look for plants that are smaller in size, or have a compact growth habit. Many plants have dwarf varieties, which can be an excellent option when you don’t have a ton of space to work with. Hanging baskets or planters on your windows can also add more greenery and vegetation without taking up ground space.

Tip #4: Create functional spaces

At Bella Vista Landscape, we love when our clients can enjoy their properties to the fullest. Considering the functionality you want from your yard can help create the ultimate getaway. Creating a distinct area for seating versus dining versus a little piece put away for a vegetable garden is a great way to make sure that you are utilizing the space you have to serve your unique needs; this can increase your satisfaction, and oftentimes raises the property value of your home. It’s a win-win!
